Retreats in IrelandiCAL Export

Journey into the unknown… In the 5th century, from a beautiful creek in the southwest of Ireland, the brilliant Celtic seafarers Saint Brendan and his companions, set sail into the unknown of the Atlantic, compelled by the Spirit to seek the Island of the Promised Land…

This incredible journey offers a wonderful imaginative and mythic space in which to do our inner, creative soul-work.

Brendan stepped out into the coracle and took to the waves in an act of surrendering… we will explore what we need to let go of in order to be more free. Discovering the Island of the Talking Birds and The Island of Silence, we will explore the nature of the distractive mind and find strategies from our Christian tradition about how to calm the mind and find peace in silence with God. The Island of the Strong Ones will be a rich symbol to explore what strength we need for our life journeys. Brendan and his companions unknowingly landed on the back of a sea monster, which they believed to be an island; but once they lit a fire, the whale started to move revealing its true nature; at first, they fled in terror, but eventually they returned to the whale to celebrate resurrection. Can we open our eyes to what’s going on beneath the surface of ourselves and face our fears so the very place of fear becomes a place of resurrection? And arriving at the Island of the Promised land, Brendan found exquisite gemstones and fruits on trees – what gifts is Christ offering us now for the journey?

The retreat will include various approaches such as music, discussion, stillness, prayer, in order to encounter our deeper selves and the Christ of freedom and journeying…

A RETREAT ON SAINT KEVIN - AT GLENDALOUGH

20th September 2024 10:30am - 4pm

THE CAVE, THE BLACKBIRD & THE MONSTER |  A Journey with the Christian Contemplative, Saint Kevin.
Imagine going deeper on a journey with the 6th century Saint Kevin... Just a few minutes from the stunning Monastic Site of Glendalough, Ireland, is the Brockagh Resource Centre (close to Glendalough Hermitages / St Kevin's Church) and it’s here that the day retreat will take place. We will use presentation, music, stillness, discussion, to explore the compelling spirituality of this famous hermit including the profound image of Saint Kevin’s Cave, which offers us rich ground for considering contemplative silence and why our hearts often yearn for stillness. The unforgettable story of Saint Kevin and the Blackbird will be presented through storytelling and we’ll explore questions such as: How does this story show the relationship between prayer and creation and prayer and spiritual birth? Space for inner soul work will be offered; the startling symbol of the monster of the lough can be an aid to looking at our own shadow sides and how we can bring these gently to light as well as noticing the hidden treasures we may carry. The day will end (weather permitting) with prayer in the sacred place of Glendalough itself, at St Kevin’s well.

Venue: Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh House, Ballard, Glendalough, Co. Wicklow, Ireland A98D3H1

The Irish Saint Ia, at a young age, literally missed the boat when her companions left Ireland, heading for Cornwall. Fearing crossing the sea alone, she prayed and saw a small leaf floating on the water. She watched it and it grew larger and larger. She trusted God, the leaf became her coracle and carried her across the ocean.

Ia’s story will be the creative ground from which to draw from in order to deepen your own spirituality. Using Ignatian guided imaginative prayer, you will explore the journey of surrender, solitude, the leafy coracle and the wild elemental ocean, wind and sky. Her incredible odyssey across the sea will also offer beautiful material for your own creative writing. And slowing down and walking mindfully, you'll enter a leaf labyrinth, relaxing into a slow walking prayer on your journey to the Centre, to God... All are welcome and no writing experience is needed.
